Mixed bag of Lollies
James Weaver
After saying the other week about the lack of women in thurrock bands, along come The Lollies, all female except for the drummer.
Sound like Kenickie? Well The Lollies are very much in that indie pop punk vein.
(Be My) Bad Boyfriend sounds very expensive with a lovely church organ sound, and this is obvious throughout the five-track EP. It is pretty obvious what the song is about from the title, so I won't elaborate.
Found Myself At The Supermarket is ver clever, using tannoy effects and has some fantastic harmonies. Despite its tricks, however, this song didn't do it for me.
Boycrush Pusher is much more like the stuff that bands should be doing. Varied, dynamic, well structured and very true. Especially the line about teenage poetry, which most of us can relate to. I really like the guitar on this song. The only problem is the end is a bit of an anticlimax as it just peters out.
Day Job Nighmare is a fairly throw-away song about the drudgery of 'real jobs'. Musically it is fine although once again the coda lets it down by drifting away, although this time with a little more panache.
Hello Dougie may give the Performing Rights Society a field day when this EP comes out. It is a punk-pop version of Why Does it Always Rain On Me? by Travis. It is quite funny with a chorus that makes me laugh, especially as i am not Travis' biggest fan.
